Stephen Lloyd was an inspirational lawyer and innovator who dedicated his working life to advising charities and social enterprises and who pioneered significant developments in the sector. He died suddenly on 20th August 2014 while sailing in Newport Bay, a place that he loved dearly. The exact cause of his death is unknown.

Stephen was widely known for his expertise, dynamism, creative intellect, wisdom, leadership, sense of fun and commitment to good causes, and his friends and admirers have established the Stephen Lloyd Awards to preserve and perpetuate the memory, ideals and legacy of such an extraordinary man.

Aim of the awards

Stephen was a passionate developer of new ideas, the Community Interest Company perhaps being his most enduring legacy and a typical example of him identifying a need, thinking around the problem, finding an innovative solution and driving through the required change.

As well as developing his own social innovations, Stephen was an admirer and supporter of other social innovators and throughout his career at Bates Wells Braithwaite always had at least one project on the go, where he gave legal support to getting someone else’s project off the ground because he believed in its potential. The awards are about creating success and, in line with Stephen’s own approach, they will support early stage projects that have real potential to achieve practical, sustainable social change. They will harness the expertise and the finance of those with deep knowledge of the charity and social enterprise sector in order to help socially valuable projects move from concept to realisation.

Go-Forward have been shortlisted for the Stephen Lloyds Awards, from an applicant base of 103. The Stephen Lloyds Awards continue to support Go Forward throughout the developmental phase.
